3. Disk Defragmentation – this is a Windows option that allows files and folders on your computer to be consolidated, so each occupies a single space on the disk. It’s kind of like putting all your electric bills in one folder, and your charge card bills in another. With all your files stored neatly, end to end, and without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up. Defragmentation should be performed at regular intervals (weekly would be optimal) to keep your computer running smoothly. Again, there is some variation in systems,but the basic set – up is;

Click Start – >Click all Programs – >Click Accessories – >Click system Tools – >Click Disk Defragmenter.

The tool will ask which drives you want to defragment, click analyze disk, and the tool will tell you if you should defragment the analyzed drive. Analyzing will also tell you how long the defragmentation process will take. Click the Defragment disk button and a box will come up showing you the progress. you can also view a report when the process is complete.

4. Detect and repair Disk errors – this allows you to check the integrity of the files stored. Your hard drive can develop bad sectors which slow down performance and make file saving difficult. The Error Checking Utility scans the hard drive to check for bad sectors, file system errors, and misplaced files or folders. To run the Error Checking Utility;

Close all open files – >Click Start – >Click Computer – >Right Click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors – >Click Properties – >Click Tools Tab – >Click Check Now – >In the check Disk dialog box select the scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box – >Click Start

If bad sectors are found, choose to fix them. Only select the Automatically fix file system error check box if your disk contains bad sectors.

5. Speed Start – Up – Check for programs that run in the background when you start – up your computer. To do this;

Click Start – >Click run – >then type in msconfig – >Click the Startup tab to see all of the applications that load at this time.

Uncheck any applications that do not make your computer run such as games, updaters, or messenger applications. many programs try to run in the background even when they are idle. you don’t need them idling there slowing down your start – up.

6. Remove Wallpapers – These slow down the entire system. Picture files can significantly reduce your PC’s speed. Think about reducing the size of your wallpaper to around 200 kilobytes. you can change it by right clicking on any part of your desktop’s background.

7. Disable Animations – Running these can make your computer run much slower. Items such as window transparency, animations, drop shadows and showing window contents when dragging can be enabled or disabled individually or all at one time. These applications not only slow your computer but will reduce your laptops battery performance.

The first three steps are the most important in improving your computer’s speed and performance. you may find the improvement significant enough that you can stop there. however, step #2 Free up Disk Space and step #3 Disk Defragmentation should be done routinely to maintain the speed you gained.

Depending on how long you have been using your computer without performing these steps, it may take longer than 2 hours to do But, if done routinely these steps will take less than one hour. I think it is worth it to avoid the frustration that comes with waiting several minutes for a page to load.

In middle school, my best friend and I used live by the motto “dare to be different.” We were all about expressing our individuality by wearing mismatched clothes and staging silly stunts just to stand out from the crowd, but in the case of tech, can being too different be a liability?

PocketNow recently got its hands on some mockups of a reimagined Windows Phone user interface. The concepts came from an unidentified Nokia R&D senior graphic designer, who now works at Accenture, and are somewhat reminiscent of the experience imagined for some of the company’s concept phones, such as the Nokia Gem. That all-touch-screen device changes every time you use a different function.

The former Nokia designer’s concept, while unique with its floating icons and artsy background (see the above image), looks confusing and unintuitive, but I’m not here to criticize the design. (It should be noted that the designer did this as a personal project, and though it’s certainly not my cup of tea, I applaud her for trying something different. after all, ideas aren’t born out of passivity.) Instead, two things stuck out for me.

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t have to root our devices, and there would simply be an option to choose between the stock UI or custom UI.

First, the PocketNow article references a quote from Nokia’s Chief Technology Officer Rich Greene that caused a little confusion. The quote is from a talk given at a “Windows Phone Day” seminar back in February 2011, just days after Microsoft and Nokia announced their strategic partnership. “We certainly do, in the context of this agreement,” Greene said, “have the right to manipulate the UX, the UI, etc.”

This led some to believe that Nokia has the ability to create a custom skin for Windows Phone, but this is not true. a spokesman for Microsoft’s Window Phone team confirmed to Crave this week what we were told from the very beginning–that like the rest of the handset manufacturers, Nokia can only customize the OS through hubs and applications, and making any changes to the actual UI is not allowed.

However, for a brief moment I thought, “What if this were true and Nokia could change the Windows Phone interface?” The idea made me a little nervous and brought to mind a topic that’s been debated before but has yet to be settled: are custom UIs on smartphones andtablets good or bad?

It’s an issue that comes up most often withAndroid because of all the custom skins. unless they’re offering a pure Google experience device, manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Motorola, and HTC are free to skin their smartphones and tablets with their personalized versions of Android. on the one hand, there’s value in the openness of Android, as it gives companies the opportunity to innovate and hopefully make the OS better.

I also understand why manufacturers do it. with limitations on what you can do with hardware design and specs, tweaking the software is an easy way to differentiate oneself from the competition.

On the other hand, if the UI isn’t done well, it makes for a horrible user experience and can complicate things like software updates.

Perhaps learning from other people’s mistakes and its own experience with Windows Mobile, Microsoft took a different approach with Windows Phone. The company places pretty strict restrictions on what manufacturers can do with the hardware and software. All Windows Phone handsets must have the three requisite buttons below the screen (start, back, and search) and a dedicated camera button. As I mentioned earlier, Nokia, as well as all Windows Phone partners, can only personalize the software via hubs and applications.

Microsoft argues that this more closed system offers a more consistent user experience, so even if a customer upgraded from one Windows Phone to another, he or she would instantly know how to use it since the UI is the same.

So what’s the better philosophy?

Of course, there isn’t one definitive right answer. after years of reviewing numerous smartphones of varying platforms, it’s a question I still struggle with. I do, however, tend to fall more on the side of having a consistent UI across a platform, with some room for some customization.

I don’t want to see the choice and openness you get with Android stymied. after all, custom skins have contributed to some of the great features found on Android today. However, the differences in Android UIs can also be confusing; some just plain stink, and dare I mention the dreaded f word?

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t have to root our devices, and there would simply be an option to choose between the stock UI or custom UI. Until this happens, I think there is value in Microsoft’s thinking regarding having a universal look and feel across devices. Plus, Windows Phone still offers some customization via its Start screen and allows manufacturers to add their own touches like HTC Hub.

However, my take might differ from yours, so I’d love to get everyone’s feelings on this issue. Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.

At present, there is no officially sanctioned way to download and install new Flash-based themes onto your LG KU990 Viewty.

Just a word of caution: I, or anyone else accepts no responsibility for any damage that hacking into your Viewty to upload a new theme will cause. Installing a new, unofficial theme using these methods may violate your Viewty’s warranty. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Backup the contents of your phone. This is vital man. do this with a software called EFS Media Builder. This software allows you to browse and delete protected directories on your Viewty. Don’t worry, I have scouted the internet for these programs, and I’ll provide you the links to access the necessary files to get your themes up and running

EFS Media Builder is just the tool used to access the secret and hidden directories on your LG Viewty. However, you’ll also need Themes Manager 3.2, which contains the various themes like iPhone, Windows Theme, Viewty and many other themes.

So what you do is access the secret directories I told you about, and basically install these themes into your phone.

Step 1: Download the files EFS MediaBuilder and Theme Manager 3.2

Step 2: run EFS Media Builder, and navigate to LGAPP/Media/swf/theme. BACKUP theme_bg2.swf. If you really don’t want to fuck things up, just backup the whole damn theme folder.

Step 3: choose where you want to install your theme manager.

Installing to Memory Card:

1) Install theme_bg2.swf into LGAPP/Media/swf/theme using EFS Media Builder then restart the phone once done.

2) Navigate to Settings, Phone settings, Connectivity, USB Connection mode and pick Mass Storage from the list then connect the phone to pc

3) Switch USB connection mode to Mass Storage then browse to the Memory Card/Removable Storage.

4) Drag and drop the Themes folder from the rar file directly to the root of the memory card.

6) Navigate to Settings, Screen, Handset theme and pick Silver from the list.

Installing to Phone Memory

1) Edit the ThemeList.txt file to make all custom themes point towards the phone memory (//LGAPP/Media/swf/theme/Themes)

2) Navigate to LGAPP/Media/swf/theme with EFS Media Builder.

3) Drag and drop theme_bg2.swf file and the Themes folder into this loction then restart the phone.

4) Navigate to Settings, Screen, Handset theme and pick Silver from the list

You need to edit the ThemeList.txt if you install to the Phone as it currently set to the memory card location. Change the ’0′ to ’1′ for all the themes in the ThemeList.txt file.

Step 4: Installing additional themes (if any)

Perform the following:

1) Create a new folder inside the Themes folder and give it a name relevant to the theme you’re about to install.

2) Drag and drop all the new theme files into the newly created folder.

3) Update ThemeList.txt to point towards the newly installed theme .SWF files.

Step 5:

So now that you’ve installed it successfully, what do you do? run it of course. Duh

To load the Themes Manager, double tap the C button (located on the actual handset) to bring up the list of available themes. Use the left and rights arrows, or use the jog wheel, to navigate through the pages and click on the theme you wish you use. once you have a theme you wish to keep double tap C button again to hide the menu.

You can also swap between the built in icon styles by pressing the Black or Coloured button.
