Get an OBi100 VoIP adapter for $39.99, make free calls for life

The Obihai OBi100 phone adapter works with Google Voice to give you free calling for life.

Yesterday I wrote about the Ooma Telo phone system, which for $109.99 allowed you to ditch your landline and make nearly free phone calls for life. (Your only obligation: a few bucks’ worth of monthly taxes and fees.) Alas, it sold out quickly.

More than a few commenters suggested an alternative: the Obihai OBi100, which can pair with Google Voice (among other services) for totally free calls. and talk about a cosmic coincidence: today the sucker’s on sale.

Specifically, Amazon has the Obihai OBi100 VoIP phone adapter for $39.99 shipped. That’s $20 off the regular price and about $10 less than you’ll find it anywhere else.

I’m not intimately familiar with this device, but it appears to work much like an Ooma or MagicJack plus. You plug your existing cordless phone system into the the OBi100, plug the OBi100 into your router, and presto: you’ve got dial tone.

Actually, there’s a bit more to the setup than that, at least with this device, as you have to configure it for use with your Google Voice account (or another service, like Sipgate). But once that’s done, you should be looking at totally free local and long-distance calling forever.

Update:At the moment, Google Voice will be offering free calling only through the end of 2012. It’s unknown whether Google will extend that. however, the OBi100 works with a variety of services, including Sipgate One, which is indeed free for life. so even if Google starts charging for phone service, you should be able to find a freebie alternative. Will there be hassles involved in switching? perhaps, but sometimes that’s just part of the cheapskate lifestyle!

OBi calling features include caller ID, call forwarding, anonymous caller blocking, three-way conference calls, and voice mail. however, I didn’t see any mention of a blacklist feature, which I’ve found invaluable on my Ooma for blocking telemarketers and other unwanted callers.

Also, be prepared to give up your current phone number, as Google Voice doesn’t currently allow number porting from landlines. (Someone smarter than me may know a workaround to this; let’s hear about it in the comments.) one other important caveat: the OBi doesn’t do 911, period. (The device actually has “no emergency calls” pasted across it in big letters.)

Those couple gripes notwithstanding, this is one of the cheapest ways to keep landline-style phone service in your home — perhaps the cheapest. and the OBi100 is remarkably popular on Amazon, with an average 4.8-star rating from nearly 300 buyers. for 40 bucks out the door, it’s awfully compelling.

Bonus deal: looking to make the move to a solid-state drive? Today only, Giveaway of the Day has Paragon’s Migrate OS to SSD 2.0 (Win) for free. True to its name, the utility migrates your existing Windows installation to an SSD. Doesn’t matter if it’s larger or smaller. The program usually sells for $19.95.

Link between Norwegian killer and right-wing South African blog unearthed

Posted in nec Accessories by Admin on December 7, 2011 No Comments yet

It has been revealed that the perpetrator of the recent horror massacre in Oslo may have been influenced by a right-wing South African blog, reports online publisher News24.

It has come to light that Anders Behring Breivik, the man behind the Oslo bombings and mass shootings, borrowed heavily from several sources, including the controversial blog iluvsa. The blog is hosted by Google’s blog service, Blogger.

In Breivik’s rambling 1 500-page Manifesto on Western Civilisation, there is a link to what he calls the “democratic struggle against the Islamisation of Europe” with arguments made by iluvsa against multi-culturalism in the South African, and global, context.

The iluvsa site features a blood-spattered banner, with the words “I Luv South Africa .. But I hate my Government” emblazoned across it.

A Memeburn search revealed that Brevik was particularly interested in a post from the blog entitled “from Titans To Lemmings: The Suicide of The White Race Part II”.

At one point the post asks:

If all races are equal, why aren’t the Chinese, the Japanese, the Koreans, the Arabs, the Pakistanis, the Indians, the Africans all accepting masses of immigrants into their lands and allowing alien cultures and religions to be of equal importance to their own?

The bio of iluvsa’s Facebook page explains “ILuvSA was conceived as an online space where South Africans both home and abroad could come together to discuss the issues of the day in a political correctness-free environment”.

The blog’s first post explains why iluvsa is “needed”.

“We pledge therefore to reveal to the world the true horror of the “rainbow nation” under the repressive, Marxist, socialist, black-nationalist, racist regime that is the ANC government.”

Caller ID and Blocking Calls With MagicJack – Yes, There Are Some Easy and Free Solutions

Posted in caller Id by Admin on September 25, 2011 No Comments yet

When I look over the statistics and see the Google search terms for my blog, one of the larger keyword phrases I see is how to use MagicJack with call blocking or caller ID. And I’ve good news and bad news. Officially, MagicJack does have caller ID and doesn’t have call blocking. But there are a few nifty free tricks you can easily do to have those functions.

Since caller ID is the easiest let’s do that first. MagicJack essentially keeps a log of all incoming (and outgoing) calls. And basically you just need to label the numbers. Once the numbers are labeled whenever you get a call from the number again you’ll be able to identify the caller. so there you go caller ID. It’s easy, but a little bit of a speed bump. I think the real thing people want is the ability to identify unknown callers. Guess what though? if the person calling you has chosen to hide their number you wouldn’t be able to see it anyway. so back to square one no matter what phone service you use.

But I understand where all this leads; getting calls from unknown callers makes you want something to block them. And again, regular phone companies aren’t really furnishing this service as much as they used to. I remember in the 90′s being able to get call blocking and then the phone companies seemed to have stopped offering it and started giving out a if the caller is harassing you fill out a police report, send that to us and we’ll block the number solution. I don’t know why but the phone companies just wouldn’t do it, or if they did not without a substantial fee. Internet based phone companies like MagicJack and Vonage aren’t offering the service either. I was with Vonage for five solid years and no matter how much we complained they just wouldn’t do it.

To the rescue comes a couple of internet solutions. the best solution to block calls is and (at the same time) isn’t available. it used to be called Grand Central. they issue you a phone number and you link it up to all your personal phone numbers. the phone number they give you acts as a first line of defense; you can then block incoming calls, reroute them to your a number of choice, or send them to voicemail. Again, it’s free. But currently it’s being rebuilt as Google Voice. I strongly urge MagicJack users, and really everybody, to sign up for a Google Alert to let you know when the service goes live again. In March of 2009 they announced they were nearly ready. And coupled with a service like MagicJack which is only 20 dollars a year (or a dollar a month if you use it the way I do) it’s the most powerful and inexpensive phone/voicemail/texting combination you can get.

Until Google Voice is available I recommend that you get a free piece of software called PhoneTray. it will work with your computer’s modem to act as a first line defense with incoming calls. among the many features it can do for free is it can also block calls. so in just a few minutes you can have a system that will give you a lot of peace.

Is the Apple Iphone about the same size as the LG Dare?

I was wondering if I would be able to use a pink iphone case on the lg dare…?

According to CNET (a rating website), the screen is 3.0 inches, which is smaller than the iPhones, however, i have seen pictures of the Dare and it appears as if it is definitely thicker, so your best bet would be to assume that it won't fit.

The LG dare is 4.1 inches in height and the screen is 3.0 inches so theres no absoulte way that it would fir sorry. also the LG dare is I think a little bit more thick than the iPhone.

what these people are crazy, i have the dare (my store got it in early) and the dare is way smaller than the iphone, and the thickness it about 1 and 1/2 ipod touches

well it might fit , lol
i think there the same size , but one , if it dont just bring it back lol !

can you help me ?

How can you format Digital media memory card for your digital camera without losing the pictures?

Posted in digital Memory by Admin on July 7, 2011 No Comments yet

I have scan Disk, KODAK, SD digital memory card and all of them wants me to format the card for my digital camera, but i'm afraid if i format the card, I will lose all my pictures, and I haven't save them yet. somebody help me
Diaz

You can't. Try to save the pictures first. Get a card reader and copy them over to your computer before you format. if it doesn't work, then there may be a glitch in the card. In that case, get another card immediately, and look for some good image recovery software for that one.

save pictures to computer and then format. Formatting takes media to near virgin status

I live in houston, texas and someone keeps calling me from a payphone. does anyone know of a free service?

Posted in payphones by Admin on July 1, 2011 No Comments yet

where i can look up the number and it will tell me the location of the number.

go to whitepages.com/reverse-lookup

no, thats whats so great about pay phones, they are entirely anonymous =)

google 'reverse directory' and several will come up. Some provide the address info; some do not.

If the person is harassing you, I would call the police. they can probably talk with your phone company and check the call logs to find out where they're coming from.
